Phone number required, straight to my trash bin.
This site looks pretty nice judging from the app store preview. But alas, I will likely never know. Nor will others I imagine. Upon opening this app, I was greeted by the old sign up or login screen. Okay…I guess. However, upon viewing the sign up fields, I noticed that a valid mobile phone number is required so that the people running this app can "SMS my account activation code” to me. Why not email the activation code , as is more typical?
What possible legitimate reason could a stock charting app have that would require me to enter my phone number? Maybe just marketing? Great, because that is what everybody wants, telemarketing calls on their cell phone. And, sadly, this would be the best case scenario. In an age where the theft of information and identity are common worries, the more information that a person is required to provide, the more uncomfortable and wary they should be.
Now, as nervous as it makes me giving out my email address, and as reluctant as I may feel to do so, I have come to accept that this is often a required exchange to take advantage of certain services and information offered online. So be it. But, I absolutely, will not give out my phone number just to check out some app that may or not be worth a darn. If the folks in charge of this app have any sense, they will remove, at least, the phone number requirement. Hopefully, then, this negative review can be buried among many positive reviews. Until then, good luck harvesting phone numbers from an increasingly skeptical and savvy public.
